New Twitters! - Check out my latest Twitter: CineWire - The latest movie news! Plain and simple.
Kodachrome - The End of an Era - Kodachrome film has been discontinued by Kodak. While there are other films out there, the loss of Kodachrome is the end of an era in photography. There are interesting links regarding the end of Kodachrome:

Current Productions - Right now, my priority is in photography. I have digital cameras, but love working with film! I have shot my first roll of Fujichrome Velvia 50 slide film. This film is known for its saturated colors. This summer, I am shooting with Kodak's Kodachrome slide film. What I still love about film is that it is organic, and gives me the beautiful colors, contrast and definition I love! Thanks to a great lab (Memphis Professional Imaging), I get great processing and all of my photos professionally transferred to digital. That way, I get all the benefits of film, and all the convenience of digital! I also have a Nikon Coolscan film scanner that allows me to digitize my existing 35mm negatives and slides. On the digital front, I have a recent 12-megapixel Nikon 5100 digital camera that I use while on the road. My current goals are to work intensively with new subjects and new challenges. My goal is to be a professional photographer and make my work available to more and more people!
I regularly post my photos on my
flickr page.

  Introduction
My name is John Miller. I am an independent photographer, writer and filmmaker from the Memphis, Tennessee area. I have been a member of the Memphis Digital Arts Cooperative, and am actively involved in the Memphis creative scene! I am hard working, energetic and determined to create the best work possible.

In photography, I specialize in landscapes, cityscapes and nature. I also love taking photos of people, airliners and classic cars! When it comes to filmmaking, I specialize in cinematography, directing, writing and editing. I am experienced with professional digital camcorders (Canon XL1), lighting (Lowel), audio (Yamaha) and editing (Avid and Final Cut Pro) equipment. I am currently shooting with my Canon HV30 high-definition camcorder. I have an extensive background in the media arts, including film, television, radio, advertising, public relations and newspapers. I enjoy working with those who are driven and want to create great work together.

Photography is always an exciting craft and art form! I love working with all kinds of subjects and with all kinds of people.

Filmmaking is a highly collaborative art form and requires all involved to operate as a team. That's what I believe in. I regard anyone I work with as a fellow artist. I will always give those with whom I am working true respect. I enjoy sharing my creative vision with others, and want them to share theirs with me.

If I sound like the kind of person you would like to work with, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

In the summer of 2007, I completed two Cinematography Courses at the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. My two weeks there were very interesting. I met many talented filmmakers and had two great instructors. I am hoping that my experience with the professional filmmakers and equipment will serve me well when working in the film industry. I enjoyed my introduction to 35mm and 16mm motion picture cameras at The Workshops, and look forward to stopping back there sometime soon. It is always fun being a member of the filmmaking community!

While working with the folks at the Memphis Digital Arts Co-operative, we got to work on all kinds of short films. While the Co-op is gone now, you can check out information on the films we made, along with behind-the-scenes photos on the Co-op Page.

Films I have worked on include: "Southern Comfort" (Television Pilot / 20th Century Fox Television), "Streaker" (Digital Feature), and "Rookie Bookie" (Digital Feature). Also, a short subject entry into Atom Films' Star Wars contest, and a workshop project with independent filmmaker Rob Nilsson.

(My chronicles on making my first feature-length documentary)

CHAPTER 4 - April 21, 2008 - Well, it's one of those best-laid plans kind of things! I had planned to do my documentary short subject on a film festival out West. But, the director of the festival isn't into it. I had called her, telling her what I planned to do, the interview I wanted to do, etc. When I hadn't heard back, I emailed. But, there was no response. I called and was able to get a hold of her. We talked, and she seemed interested. But, she said we would have to talk when she had more time.

Well, I called when we had arranged, and nothing. Just her voice mail. I tried again after that, and nothing again. It looks like the same kind of thing I've experienced before in the film industry. People may tell you what they think you want to hear, then just leave you without ever hearing back. I guess that's just the way it is in filmmaking. People are off in their own directions, and if you fit in fine. If not, though, you're just out of luck.

At this point, I will look at working on one of my other potential projects. I don't think small, though, and it might not be easy to get them made. But, I can certainly try! We will have to see what happens. In the meantime, I do have my photography, and that has been going fairly well. So, I guess you just have to go step by step, don't you?
